Dr. Wei obtained her Ph.D. in Laser Plasma Physics from the Imperial College, University of London in 2005. She earned a M.Sc. in Plasma Physics from the Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Science in 1996 and a B. Sc in Physics from the Anqing Normal University in China in 1993.
Dr. Mingsheng Wei is Senior Scientist and Manager of the National Laser Users’ Facility (NLUF) at the University of Rochester’s Laboratory for Laser Energetics (UR/LLE). As NLUF Manager and Coordinator for the Laboratory Basic Science (LBS) program and the LaserNetUS program at LLE, Dr. Wei coordinates all external users’ experiments conducted at the Omega Laser Facility and is committed to working with the broad high-energy-density physics (HEDP) community and all the other stakeholders to grow this important field and develop a high-caliber workforce.
Prior to joining the UR/LLE, Dr. Wei was Scientist and Principal Investigator at General Atomics, San Diego from 2010 to 2018, leading research in HEDP, inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and fast and shock ignition as well as interfacing target development for repetition-rated laser experiments. From 2005 to 2010, Dr. Wei was Project Scientist at the Center for Energy Research at University of California, San Diego conducting high-intensity laser experiments and particle-in-cell simulations to understand relativistic laser–plasma interaction physics and energetic particle (electron and proton) beam generation and transport in solid, warm, and hot dense plasmas.
She has served as a Member of the Executive Committee of the Omega Laser User Group (OLUG) and of the National Ignition Facility (NIF) User Group; Program Committee Member for the APS Division of Plasma Physics Annual Meeting (2012, 2017), Anomalous Absorption Conference (2014), and ICHED (2015); Session Organizer for the IEEE Conference on Plasma Science (2009, 2010, 2016, 2017), local organizer for the Fusion Science Center HEDP Summer School at UC San Diego (2011). She has also served as Panel Member and Proposal Reviewer for funding agencies.
Dr. Wei is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. She is author or co-author on more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed international science journals including Nature Physics, Physical Review Letters, and Physics of Plasmas among others.
