Cary Forest is a Professor of Physics at the University of Wisconsin - Madison and Principal Investigator of the Wisconsin Astrophysics Laboratory. His research straddles the border between nuclear fusion research and laboratory plasma astrophysics, and includes dynamos in plasma and liquid metal, MHD turbulence, MHD instabilities and their stabilization, and transport.
During his career at Wisconsin, he has built 4 major experiments within the plasma group. Most recently, the Madison Plasma Dynamo experiment (MPDX), which was featured in the 2012 BBC Horizon's episode "Solar Storms: the threat to planet Earth."
He is the recipient of the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, the David and Lucille Packard Foundation Fellowship, and a Research Award from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. Dr. Forest was the Chair of the National Research Council's committee on Plasma Science. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, and has recently served as Chair of the Division of Plasma.
