David Leinweber is a Lead Data Scientist at Tri Alpha Energy, a former Wall Street quant, and author of Nerds on Wall Street. He began his career at MIT where he studied nuclear physics and computer science (and was one of the first 5000 people on the Internet, back when it was called the ARPAnet and wasn’t cool). He then went to Harvard and received a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics.
After graduate school, he transitioned to the financial world. His interests focused on applying modern information technologies to trading and investing. He has founded two financial technology companies. As Managing Director at First Quadrant, he was responsible for quantitative global equity portfolios totaling $6 billion. And he has been a pioneering participant in electronic markets; advanced Trading magazine named him an "Innovator of the Decade" in 2011.
Recently, he transitioned back to the physics world, leading the data science effort at Tri Alpha Energy, including applying the world's larger super computers to plasma simulation and using cutting-edge machine learning techniques to optimize machine operation.
