DPP Committee for the Concerns Of Students and Early Career Scientists
The APS Division of Plasma Physics Committee for the Concerns Of studeNts aNd Early Career scienTists (CONNECT) advocates and provides resources to students and early career scientists in the field of plasma physics, and beyond.
We organize a student day on the Sunday before the annual meeting and a town hall event on the Tuesday of the annual meeting. This website serves as an archive for resources, past events, and a connection point for various related groups (Young APS DPP Community, HelioNet).
DPP Community:
I want to apologize for the recent event where an invitation letter from APS meetings was erroneously sent to 35 individuals, inviting them to speak at this year's Division of Plasma Physics (DPP) meeting in Spokane, WA, October 17-21, 2022. This was an unfortunate error – inviting and retracting a nomination such as this one is difficult for the recipients, for which I am truly sorry.
This was an administrative error that impacted both men and women as well as those from many different backgrounds. There was a miscommunication of information, without sufficient checks and balances in place to capture the error. We on the Executive Committee of DPP are working with APS meetings to improve the process that led to such an error, and to recommend safeguards to keep this from happening again. These safeguards will be captured in our best practices documentation for future meetings. My hope is that our community can find some comfort in understanding this regrettable situation a bit better.
I have reached out to the 35 individuals impacted by this administrative error and have offered my personal apology. If anyone would like to discuss the situation further, please let me know, I am happy to do so. I hope that you will submit a contributed abstract and attend this year's meeting, despite these difficulties.
Regards,
Denise Hinkel
2022 DPP Chair
